BIO & BACKGROUND:
Aloha, my name is Deb Schroeder!
(UPDATED IN NOV. 2009)
My path to yoga may not have been a typical one. Or maybe it was. My thought is that anyone who finds themsleves practicing yoga is on a path (whether they are conscious of it or not) towards a higher plane. Not that we become better or more auster than those who do not practice. Just that practicing yoga brings inner peace and space. Almost without trying! It comes with the territory. You become surrounded by such wonderous and lovely souls ~ each following their path and sharing their energy (prana) with you.
And with the space that is created we allow ourselves a place to set new seeds of growth. It also allows us to think outside of ourselves and opens us up for endless learning. I feel so blessed that in my 40's I find myself on a path that will carry me through the rest of my life. No one is too old for yoga. It is a diverse and layered practice. So much to dive into to, it brings me JOY to share, co-mingle and spread this JOY around my community.
And it doesn't hurt that Yoga (both the physical and philosophical) help to calm me and keep me centered more easily finding my balance in an ever quick paced world. Finding PEACE when ever I open my heart, breath and work my practice.
With that said, I found Yoga in my 41st year of life, although I would love to say that it flowed through my blood for the first 41 years (never know, it could have been sitting there just waiting for me to open my eyes.) I was looking for a way to get in touch with myself and at the same time spread my wings out of the hosue and into the realm of having a hobby/job that allowed flexability while enriching my life.
Who would have known at my first certification that this would re-sound in my soul so deeply! I was hooked. As I made my way through my first yoga classes, I kept with it. I was new to yoga and I was the teacher! Crazy one might say but I have to say there was a magic that I could not even deny. As I cut my teeth, my students (who also taught me how to teach them) seemed to gain new insight into their practices. I was thrilled! Seeing myself with new eyes and feeling this fountain bubbling forth I knew I was on the right track.
My first yoga certification came from YogaFit in August 2007. I finished taking my Level 2 and 3 training in November 2008. They were really great at zeroing on How To Teach. I give YogaFit a lot of credit for that.
In 2009 I was blessed with receiveing my RYT-200 through Open Space Yoga in Honolulu. I had 3 gifted teachers who with their diverse backgrounds have opened my eyes to a whole new level and layer of my Yoga journey. Spending time with so many beautiful souls who are also on this path was an amazing gift. One of my teachers who has many many years of teaching and trainings under her belt said to us one day in class: "I live my life each day as a student, not as a teacher. Learning what I can from each person, each moment, each breath that comes my way." And I thought, how beautiful. How brilliant and how humble.
NUFFSAID!
Oh yeah, except that I am also CPR/First-aid certified through the American Red Cross, never know when that might come in handy!
On a non-yoga note:
I was born & raised on Oahu; after getting married in my late 20's ~ my husband and I spent 11 years in the ever sunny state of Colorado starting our family there. Bringing w/us the flavor of the mainland, we are back home in Kailua, Hawaii. Happy to smell the ocean and the large green leaves I am home to stay. ~ Currently I guide classes at the Kailua Movement Studio, the YMCA and at the Beach. I believe EVERYONE can benefit from a little bit (or a lot) of Yoga in their lives :-)
